I had started watching on TV a couple of years before, but it took until this night before I could finally go in person. It was the western conference quarter-finals. Blackhawks @ Maple Leafs. Got to Maple Leaf Gardens a couple of hours before game time and walked into Leaf Sport to browse while killing time. They had a number of game used sticks and jerseys there. Doug Gilmour was my obvious first choice but I couldn't come close to affording any of his stuff. I picked up a Todd Gill game used stick, which was my first game used anything. From that day forward I followed Gill, and he became one of my favorite players. Good, solid non-flashy defenseman. I wanted to get one of his game worn jerseys, but his stick was all I could afford. Now, one month shy of 19 years later, I finally got one of his gamers. Not only that, but I believe it's the very shirt he was wearing that night in the Gardens. The very night that cemented my love affair with this game that continues to this day. Perseverance finally paid off. The jersey is littered with holes and cuts.
