I concur....had a similiar experience in trying to acquire his incorrectly customized "1990" Lemieux all star jersey since he was interested in my 89-90 Devils I showed him pics of a Lemieux gamer (the one Casey from PenguinsChronicles.com was selling) from the 1990 all star game and he stood by his notion that nothing was wrong with the customization of his jersey. I saw that also, I made an offer of $250 earlier but he has another offer he is mulling. I already have a spare red Caps ccm, which has the NHL shield, with Gartner customization. He was not on the team by that point. I had tried to trade it here over the last couple days for a white Hawks ultrafil but since I have had no takers I am gonna get it altered to Ridley, and slap an 75th anni patch on it. I checked a few teams, including the Hawks and Capitals, and they had jerseys through 2003. Not sure if this is when MeiGray started working with teams but it is obviously a lot easier to find more recent photos so the older stuff is a great reference.
