Kind of weird, but does seem to be some kind of anti-counterfeiting measure. No other purpose I can see for it. It is impossible to see when worn, though. What I think sucks is that so many teams left the MeiGray program this past season, I wonder how they will get rid of their team issue back stock. I just hope that the new ones won't have that ugly reebok wordmark on the front. I'd consider getting a 1.0 if that's how its going to be and only wear it at home. And I think I've seen your username pop up on the avs gdt a few times too on the nhl avs forums. The gdt nowadays are so depressing and usually goes off topic when we are down 2 or 3 goals.
