Americans read is left to right, the older NHL logo (orange) was descending which was a downer so they changed it to ascending thinking it would bring a positive flow. I know sounds dumb but I thought I read it somewhere..... LOL. That's the NHL these days for you... But yes, after the lockout, the NHL changed their logo to a silver badge with the letters going up.
