classichockeyjerseys
I have a Penguins 1988-89 Authentic Jersey.I have done searches for images on the jersey lettering for it and I keep finding 2 different styles.Word is they had 1 style and towards end of season they switched to the font for the 89-92 season.Does anyone have images of a white 88-89 jersey lettered and numbered? Thelonious Sphere Monk
I could always trade you most of my collection for that jersey and some cash and then you wont have to worry about the lettering problem anymore?!?!!? Easy fix!
Brilliant!
They used two styles that year. For the first half, they had the shorter and more artsy-looking fonts that were heat-pressed vinyl. For the second half however, they changed to the taller and wider twill numbers and letters that most collectors are used to seeing from that era and had everything sewn on. First-half: http://www.classicauctions.net/Default.aspx?tabid=263&auctionid=61&lotid=592 Second-half: http://www.classicauctions.net/Default.aspx?tabid=263&auctionid=61&lotid=356 That was actually a year of pretty significant transition for the Pens' jerseys because, before that year, the arm numbers were up on the shoulders like football jerseys. For the 1988-89 season though, they were moved down to the arms. Then, of course, the material change.

The numbers were below the shoulders, where 1987-1988 was the last season they had the numbers on the shoulders.
classichockeyjerseys
Did they have a longer nameplate on the jersey as well?
slimcutta
This is exactly correct. The Penguins used air-knit material in 1988-1989. The numbers were below the shoulders, where 1987-1988 was the last season they had the numbers on the shoulders. That is incorrect. The pens had air-knit in 87-88, with numbers on the shoulders - and ultrafil in 88-89 with numbers down, but both styles. I'm pretty sure the newer style was only worn for the last set of the season. Here's an early Lemieux with screen print/early font, and a later Johnson with twill, both show the different size/style of 6s - I have tons of pens pics from this era if you want/need any more. Sluggermatt15
Slimcutta, are you sure the Penguins used ultrafil in 1988-1989? I thought they used air knit until 1990-1991, when they switched over to ultrafil. http://pittsburghhockey.net/PensPages/PensJerseyHistory/PensTags.html I said above that 1987-1988 was the FINAL season where the Penguins had the "sleeve" numbers on the shoulders. 1988-1989 was the FIRST season where the numbers were placed below the shoulder. Brilliant!
No, he's right. They definitely changed over to ultrafil in 1988. Look at the Coffey jersey link in my initial post. That's definitely an ultrafil jersey. I would imagine that 1987-88 was the last year for the air-knit jerseys in Pittsburgh. Until later on, anyway. But all the new jerseys for 88-89 and up were ultrafil. Slimcutta, Would you mind sending me some images to my email so I can see and reference to customizer when i get it done?Should I use twill numbers right? Thanks Twill for the newer style, screen print for the older style. Send me your email and I'll get you whatever you need

JeffB
So,should i use the second half for my lettering? You should use the more unique first half lettering if it matches the jersey material. The Great and Powerful Oz has spoken.
Sluggermatt15
Slimcutta, I believe you, and I bet you are correct. The team probably did recycle jerseys like you suggested. I use the Pittsburgh Hockey Museum site I provided as a reference. That's why I disagreed about using ultrafil in 1987-1988 because it says they used air knit until 1990. There are a lot of misconceptions in this hobby, and we should all avoid believing everything we read, and then passing it on as gospel without checking into it first. Many jerseys were recycled from year to year, and anomolies exist (Cam Neely wearing utrafil providence jerseys comes to mind). In and around 1985, most teams that wore mesh jerseys went to air-knit, and some went to utrafil, but some went all three ways, if only for a brief period: The Blackhawks had 1 set of mesh jerseys in the playoffs (only), I currently own all three (mesh, ultrafil, and airknit) versions of Flyers jerseys, and I've previously owned all three versions of Islanders as well, but both teams only had a few sets of Ultrafil before going to Airknit. Anyways, these are just a few examples, but I'm sure you get the point. I think I'll start a new thread dedicated to jersey/photo matching soon...could be useful.
