JeffB
Can you find the player in this photo? At what point does your ad get lost in amongst all the other ads that it's pointless to include yours in the visual noise? I'm surprised they don't take a more "soccer" approach to it and just have one big unavoidable sponsor logo on there that they charge more for. Brilliant!
Bettman will have the NHL looking like this within the next five years. If he can't improve the quality of play on the ice, then he might as well make more money from sponsors on jerseys that already cost 300 bucks. mithras1
I'm sure if they could get one big sponsor they would but they obviously can't. Looks like a Formula 1 car .

Other leagues have toyed with the idea but with a league so dependent on the gate its really just a matter of time with the NHL. Can't wait for the Sabs to be sponsored by Viagra! Dasle
That's what the Penguins jerseys will end up looking like if Bettman lets people advertise. Especially since they have the "face of the league," you know every sponsor will be trying to get their logo on Sid's jersey, and likewise everyone elses. Put a big corporate logo on the goalie jerseys with a small team logo in the corner, sort of like soccer jerseys. Slow transition to looking like a race car someday? The minor leagues have been slowly gravitating to that 'billboards with skates' ideal. The bottom line is that if there is empty space, advertising can be sold on it, no matter what the canvas is. I don't mind a company pasting its name on equipment (e.g. Cooper, CCM, etc), I may want to know who makes such goods. It could potentially never end, though. Boards (check), ice (check), jerseys, the sky is the limit. What could they charge for that, hmm...

I will say that when it comes to soccer I don't even notice the ads in the front anymore I just accept them as part of the jersey. Perhaps that might be a way going forward if the league is set on this (with Bettman I wouldn't doubt it). If we have to have it, I would much rather it be in the soccer model then the European hockey teams (like the pic above). Not that I want it....
