Sylvester71
I just bought a Starter Rangers Messier jersey. It has the fighting strap, double sewn elbows, white laces at neck, all stitched letters/numbers. But inside at the neck it has a stitched "GRETSKY" patch sewn in, and at the inside bottom it has the NHL patch with "Wayne Gretsky Set 2 98/99" patch sewn in. Messier was with the Canucks for the 98/99 season, not the Rangers. I've seen the identical jersey on eBay but with "Messier" instead of "Gretsky" on the patches. Why would my jersey have the wrong name inside?

akteon
As everyone else said it's fake. It's based on this fake Gretzky jersey that's pretty common: http://r.ebay.com/dW45qj Here's an old post that lists many of the problems with those jerseys. BPerkins
The fakes are based on tags used in 1998-99 ... similar to the all too common "Meigray Groop" tags in the Pens fakes. Here's a link to what the Gretzky tagged liberty looked like. http://www.meigray.com/edealinv/servlet/ExecMacro?nurl=control/StoreItem.vm&ctl_nbr=2381&siId=6020996&catLevel=1&scLevel=1&thisCatLevel=&oldParentID=&catParentID=4544&scId=4544 The fact the counterfeiters made a Messier with Gretzky internal tagging is not surprising. They aren't known for their accuracy.
Sylvester71
That stinks. I only paid $15 for it at a thrift store, so I don't feel too bad that its fake! Thanks for all the info everyone.
DropkickMurphy8
You still paid $15 too much.
