Team names and logos in lower leagues

As a born and bred Kiwi I have always wondered why non nhl teams get such strange names and almost jokey logos? Things like "Crunch" or Icehogs" or "Wheat Kings". Even if the team names seems pretty normal, the logo will generally be bizarre. Seems very strange to me but maybe i'm missing something not being from North America.

I think the lower levels seem to have a little more fun with the names and the fun leads to sometimes fairly cool & unique jerseys. It's like that in a lot of the sports. I would guess at the highest most exposed levels you try to keep it as professional as you can. I guess you also have to consider that most pro teams have been around for some time so you're just used to their names, teams like the Panthers & Hurricanes have names that would probably work better at the lower levels.

See and I just thought it was an awful hockey team in a place where no one cares about hockey.

I've been to Atlanta. No one cares about hockey in Atlanta.

Also, see "Islanders".

I wonder if some of it is who the sports area geared to. It seems these days families are attending the highest levels less & less and you see more families at the minor league games, which means more young kids.

Watch the game Saturday. We'll see about no caring.

There'll be as many Rangers jerseys in the stands as Isles, if not more. Should be a helluva game!

This is going to be one of the most evenly split crowds at NVMC (or pro-Isles). It isn't going to be like it was in March.

I agree that it is an effort to appeal to families and kids. This allows them to broaden the marketing beyond the game of hockey...........come see the mascot, come get your face painted, bring the kids, family outing.

Me thinks if you've ever been to Brandon or the prairies in general, you might not think a Wheat King is all that of a strange name. Manitoba and Western Canada's wheat farmers and grain growers were known as Wheat Kings after the development of Marquis Wheat, a strain that allowed them to flourish and create wealth for the region.

But hey, you're a Kiwi! Nothing strange about that name?!?!? You guys have definitely followed the K.I.S.S guidelines for naming teams - All Blacks, All Whites, White Ferns, Silver Ferns, Black Caps, Black Sticks. All Blacks and All Whites would never fly in North America.

In all seriousness, many of the names, at least in the CHL, are tied to the region and/or history.

The black this, silver that things is embarrassing to be honest, 2 teams called the black sticks for one. But those are just the national teams, local rugby clubs etc tend to go for more standards names like sharks, blues etc. Thanks for the education on the Wheat Kings!

I'll be there. Haven't decided what to wear yet...

I told you, sell the ticket for the $250 (WHICH YOU PROBABLY COULD GET ON STUBHUB!!!!!!!!) and treat your friend, Jeremy, to Champions. After it's all said and done, you get like a $150 profit (A JERSEY!!!!!) AND do not have the headache of deciding what to wear! It's like a Win-win-win!!!!!

On topic,

ECHL best team name? Wheeling Nailers

I love the MiLB team logo/name of Montgomery Biscuits.

 WOW! I had no idea time had taken such a toll. Yes, the image I had was the 10 years prior JJ. I was sincerely under the impression that p*** (adult film - can't believe p0rn is censored) stars took care of themselves and aged gracefully . Yuk. Guess I'll have to keep payin' the wife.
