Cygnus X-1
When the Blueshirts converted from CCM to Starter in '97 (I think) did Cosby's still do their customization and if so was it the infamous (ha ha) skinny font used on the CCM jersey's? I think that it was....
enzo269
The Rangers went to Starter I believe in the 1996-97 season... I may be wrong but I believe Cosby's customized the team jerseys until 1997-98.. Skinny fonts used...
Cygnus X-1
And 46 was the smallest size Starter made?
JustAnothaVictim
I have never seen any Starter jerseys that are smaller than 46-R
akteon
My understanding is that Cosby's didn't do the Rangers jerseys in 1996-97, the first year of Starter and the first year of the navy Liberty 3rds. You can see a big difference in the name font used on the Liberties in that first year and the years after. I also know that the jersey with Gretzky's name misspelled was in that first year, and there's a quote from Cosby's saying if they were doing the jerseys that wouldn't have happened. LAK74
I read somewhere that the jersey spelled "GRETKZY" was used during the 1997-98 season (Oct. 30, actually). If this is correct, it would be consistent with what Enzo said earlier about Cosby last doing the Rangers in 1996-97, and would also explain why the font looked different in 97-98. So if you had a white Starter (S with the star and wordmark underneath), first year the Rangers started wearing them, who would be able to customize it? Cygnus X-1
There seems to be subtle differences: http://www.goaliegamers.com/graves.html http://www.ty-comemorabilia.com/307GravesJersey.htm
Cygnus X-1
And another thing .....if you look at the Graves Starter, it looks like the number is shiny as compared to the CCM.....is there a special type of twill used on the Starters? LAK74
I just saw a post in the Gameworn forum by someone who worked at Cosby's, who said that Cosby did the Rangers' jerseys every year except for 1996-97- which is what Akteon posted earlier. However, looking at some photos of the misspelled Gretzky jersey, it looks to me that it's the skinnier font used in 1997-98, although I certainly could be wrong. Can anyone tell from these photos which year the customization is from?
Brilliant!
I thought it was during the 1996-97 season because it was the first year they used that style.
LAK74
One other thing I noticed in the photo was that Gretzky is wearing Hespeler gloves. From other photos I've seen, I think he wore those in the 1997-98 season, and Easton in 1996-97. So if others are right about Cosby doing the Rangers jerseys in 97-98, then would it not have been Cosby's who screwed up the Gretzky jersey? Brilliant!
You sir, are actually correct. It was 1997-98. October 30, 1997 to be precise: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/multimedia/photo_gallery/1101/jersey.misspellings/content.26.html
akteon
Yeh I guess I had the wrong year. I assumed it was Gretzky's first season with the Rangers that had the typo.
Brilliant!
I thought so too. For some reason, I seem to remember reading about it in the newspaper(remember those??) close to playoff time that year. I guess not though. Cygnus X-1
Pro Jerseys in the Smith Haven mall says they can do it, that they have the kits from Cosby....but I don't think that's correct...they said to look at the website but that font looks like the CCM font, not that slightly varied Starter font. I went there to have Gregg add the retired numbers to my two Heritage jerseys. Small world! Also a Rush fan!! Lol
Cygnus X-1
So I found this- a Starter gamer in which this font looks just like the CCM font. Did the Rangers swap back and forth between these you think, and for the sake of accuracy, would anyone use the CCM Cosby font on a Starter? http://www.classicauctions.net/Default.aspx?tabid=263&auctionid=36&lotid=
LAK74
It appears quite likely now that Cosby did both the 98-99 Leetch and the early 90's CCM's, so it seems logical to me that the font on both of these should be similar, if not identical. It may be just the 96-97 Starters that no one knows who did, and which seem slightly different than the others.
Cygnus X-1
Called Cosby's and they said that they did the customization for the Rangers in '96-97. They also said the font from the CCM jerseys was used on the Starters, Koho's etc. up until Reebok took over. Good enough for me (but those 2 links I posted above clearly show slight nuances between the CCM Graves and Starter Graves)
Cygnus X-1
Anyone notice the blue on the white NYR Starter's look a tad darker than the blue on the CCM's? Also, the blue within the Rangers logo looks lighter than I'm used to. Sometimes on eBay the Starter blue within the numbers looks lighter/brighter than the CCM. My imagination or signs I should see an optometrist?
LAK74
Not sure if an optometrist is the type of professional that you need. (Btw, I actually am an optometrist!) All kidding aside, the blue in the Rangers logo on my Starter is slightly lighter than on my CCM. I wouldn't be surprised if there were variations on this from year to year, so I can't say this would always be the case.
Cygnus X-1
Interesting- my sister and her husband are optometrists too. (But he's from Nova Scotia and likes the Habs. Bah!) If you don't mind me asking, have you had yours customized? I'm looking to do one up and I'm concerned that the colors of the letters and numbers won't match the crest and/or sleeve stripes. I'm looking to get it done by Cosby's.....gotta get those skinny letters!
LAK74
Both the Starter and CCM whites were customized by EPS, so the letters do look just slightly thicker, just like the Messier you posted earlier. I can live with it, but since you seem more particular, I think your idea of going with Cosby sounds like a good one. My current dilemma has to do with a Starter Liberty I have at EPS. I'm gradually understanding more and more about the differences in the Liberty kits from year to year, and I have a feeling the numbers are going to come out wrong. I now wish I had gone with Cosby on this one.
Cygnus X-1
At the risk of being publicly flogged, I never liked the Liberty jerseys.....and I've heard that there were some variations on the fonts between years which makes it difficult to get it done right. Good luck, hope it turns out ok!
