Crimson
On June 5, 2006, a storybook finish for the Edmonton Oilers in the Western Conference Finals brings them to the Stanley Cup Finals to welcome their opponent, the Carolina Hurricanes who are making their second ever appearance in the Big Dance. Carolina beats Edmonton in a hard-fought contest, losing Dwayne Roloson to a heartbreaking injury and back-up Ty Conklin's failure to save the game causing anguished groans that could be heard all the way from Edmonton. The Hurricanes take Game 1 with a score of 5-4: In Game 2, the Oilers fare even worse as Jussi Markkanen struggles to get into game pace. The Oilers are demolished 5-0: A stay of execution is granted to the Oilers in their first game back in Edmonton, beating the 'Canes 2-1: But the Hurricanes come back in Game 4 with an identical score of 2-1 to remind the Oilers who the higher seed was: With the Stanley Cup being polished, Game 5 heads into overtime. The Hurricanes only need one goal and the Cup is theirs, in front of a home crowd. But the Oilers score to force a Game 6: Back in Edmonton, the Oilers' determination shines through and thoroughly wallops Carolina 4-0. The hockey world is stunned as Edmonton mounted an unlikely comeback. Before Game 7 started, the Cup could have belonged to anyone. But the Oilers come out flat and tired while the Hurricanes throw wild abandon to the wind and take the game 2-1. Though Edmonton had, for a brief moment, given all of Canada hope that the Stanley Cup would come back with one of their teams for the first time in 13 years, their uninspired play in Game 7 soon made it obvious who would be bathed in champagne at the end of the night and who would be in tears: On June 19, 2006, the Stanley Cup was awarded to the Carolina Hurricanes after 25 hard-fought games. And after this photo illustration, Jason & I took off our jerseys and continued drinking. Brilliant!
Heh...that's excellent. You guys should've traded off for the white jerseys to represent who was home at the time.
